A Vote For The Chesapeake Bay

March 12, 2009, 8:12pm

Rep. Rob Wittman praised today’s House’s passage of a water-quality improvement bill and lawmakers’ decision to include his language for restoring the Chesapeake Bay. “We are truly at a tipping point” for the bay,” the Virginia Republican said. “If we don’t act now and act forcefully, we chance losing the bay forever.”

The ‘Bitter’ Politics Test

April 15, 2008, 9:29pm

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been under fire for days because of his statement that small-town Americans “cling” to guns, religion and bigotry because they are “bitter” about their economic circumstances. But other candidates may be tested by Obama’s “bitter” comments, too.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is trying to attach Obama’s words to Democratic Senate candidates Al Franken of Minnesota and Mark Warner of Virginia. The NRSC issued a video press release that all but dares them to endorse Obama.

The video releases also target Democratic convention “superdelegates” John Kerry of Massachusetts, Mary Landreiu of Louisiana, Mark Udall of Colorado and Tom Udall of New Mexico.

Rep. Eric Cantor is using the First Amendments, which guarantees the right to petition the government, in an attempt to “Save The Second.”

The Virginia Republican just launched a petition drive aimed at upholding a U.S. court decision that said the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns is unconstitutional. The U.S. solicitor general on Friday submitted a brief that said while the D.C. law may be unconstitutional, the case should be returned to a lower court and re-examined.

Cantor was irritated enough by the brief to use some of his own campaign funds to lash out at the Justice Department. “Unelected bureaucrats are trying to write away our Second Amendment rights; we must not allow this to happen,” he wrote on the Web site to promote the petition. “This is bigger than politics — this is about our fundamental rights as citizens of the United States.”

Playing Politics With The VA Budget?

November 16, 2007, 6:58pm

Rep. Thelma Drake today accused Democrats in Congress of playing politics with the fiscal 2008 budget for the Veterans Affairs Department.

Drake, R-Va., noted in the House Republicans’ weekly radio address that both the House and Senate have passed a bill that would boost VA spending by $6.7 billion but have not sent a final version to President Bush. She blasted Democrats for adjourning early for a two-week Thanksgiving break without finalizing the measure because they want to “use it as a vehicle to pass billions in unrelated spending and advance a political agenda.”

“The Democratic leadership’s scheme to hold veterans hostage is a dangerous and irresponsible precedent that should be stopped dead in its tracks before it becomes standard operating procedure in Washington,” Drake said.

Va. Senate: One Warner As Good As Another?

September 13, 2007, 10:05pm

Mark Warner flirted with the idea of a presidential run in 2008 after his term as Virginia governor ended in 2005. But after dropping that plan last fall, he announced today that he will seek to replace Republican John Warner (no relation) in the Senate. Warner last month said he will not seek re-election.

Mark Warner announced his campaign via online video:

The National Republican Senatorial Committee quickly responded to Warner’s bid by creating a Web site called “Don’t Mark Warner” and an online advertisement titled “Mark Warner’s Broken Promises”:

The political experts at HotlineTV discussed the Virginia Senate race in reaction to Warner’s announcement:
