Throw a bunch of fiery politicians into the powder keg that is the Internet and it’s only a matter of time before something explodes. And so it was today on Twitter, when Sen. John McCain posted to the mini-blog service his latest Top 10 list decrying wasteful “pork” projects in the omnibus spending bill now before Congress.

The Arizona Republican posted his first anti-pork list under the Twitter name @SenJohnMcCain late last week, calling attention to projects like $650,000 for beaver management and $1.7 million for pig odor research. He brought the Top 10 list “back by popular demand” the first two days of this week. The project in the No. 1 slot today: “$951,500 for the Oregon Solar Highway.”

That dishonor didn’t sit well with Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer, whose home state stands to benefit from the earmark. Tweeting as @repblumenauer, he mocked McCain.

McCain wasn’t familiar with a Blackberry [during the 2008 presidential campaign], right?” tweeted Blumenauer, who quickly issued a press release celebrating earmarks for Oregon when the House passed its version of the spending bill last week. “How’s he supposed to understand a solar highway utilizing right-of-way to generate solar power?”

McCain is known for a fiery temper, but he’s obviously got nothing on Blumenauer.

Blumenauer, by the way, also had this to tweet about Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal last week after Jindal delivered the GOP response to President Barack Obama’s address to Congress: “Jindal is weird. I can’t believe Jindal. Such a sad contrast with President. Doesn’t even look or sound good, to say nothing about content.”

I have a feeling it won’t be long before some lawmaker has to issue a public apology for something he or she says on Twitter.

Tax Day — And Tax Debate Day

April 15, 2008, 10:11pm

Federal income-tax returns are due to the Internal Revenue Service, making this week a politically opportune time for Congress to debate tax issues.

The House today debated a “taxpayer assistance” bill that would end the private collection of federal taxes, strengthen taxpayer protections from identity theft and tax fraud, stop federal contractors from using foreign subsidiaries to evade Social Security and other employment taxes, simplify the reporting of cellular telephone taxes, and expand tax help for low-income taxpayers.

Democrats who spoke in favor of the bill included Earl Blumenauer of Oregon, Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, Brad Ellsworth of Indiana and Rahm Emanuel of Illinois.

HotlineTV: The Senate Battle In 2008

March 14, 2007, 10:51pm

The battle for control of the Senate in 2008 thus far looks like it may be rather “boring,” according to Quinn McCord, The Hotline’s Senate campaign analyst. “[R]ight now there are only two races [Colorado and Minnesota] that actually have two challengers,” he said.

Other potential hot spots include Louisiana, Maine and Oregon, but there are no challengers yet.

Democrats are pointing fingers at Republicans this week for blocking a vote to stop a U.S. troop surge in Iraq, and the liberal activist group MoveOn.org is helping carry the Democratic water with a new advertisement that attacks various GOP senators.

“Remember their faces, remember their names — the Republicans in the United States Senate,” the MoveOn ad says as it shows images of various GOP senators with the word “escalate” superimposed by their mouths. “They’re willing to send tens of thousands more troops to face danger in Iraq, but they don’t have the courage to face a vote. Tell your senators: Stop the escalation.”

The ad specifically mentions:

  • Sam Brownback of Kansas, a potential 2008 presidential candidate;
  • Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina;
  • Judd Gregg of New Hampshire;
  • Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky;
  • Gordon Smith of Oregon;
  • Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania;
  • John Sununu of New Hampshire;
  • George Voinovich of Ohio;
  • And John Warner of Virginia.

MoveOn also produced separate videos aimed at specific senators — Brownback, Smith, Sununu and Warner.
