Back in early summer, many Republicans saw Fred Thompson as the potential savior of the 2008 presidential race for the GOP. He was the fresh face and voice in a field of candidates where none was a standout or runaway favorite.
But the longer Thompson waited to get into the race, the less significant his candidacy became. By the time he officially entered in September, announcing on a late-night television show even as the other GOP candidates debated in New Hampshire, Thompson was firmly entrenched in the also-ran category.
Now, with just days to go before the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses on Thursday, Thompson is making a last-ditch appeal to Iowa voters.
“I can stand up to those who would trifle with our great founding principles,” Thompson said in a in a 17-minute video that starts by invoking the specter of a mushroom cloud from a terrorist nuclear attack on America. “I’ve done it before. I’ll blow the whistle on their schemes. And I know how to beat them in the war of ideas.”

Ross Perot did it nationally when he ran for president in 1992, and Republican Ron Paul did it in Iowa. The two longshots ran infomercials to take their messages directly to voters.
Paul’s half-hour report aired a week ago, but you can watch it here in two parts via the Capitol Hill Broadcasting Network.
