The National Republican Senatorial Committee has produced a video titled “Two Seats” to emphasize the obstacle before the GOP to regain control of the Senate.
What the video won’t tell you: that winning those two seats is a huge hurdle in an election season where three Republican senators have announced in recent weeks that they will not seek re-election.
One of those senators, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, announced his decision yesterday. His move closely followed the news that John Warner is not running again in Virginia and that Larry Craig won’t be on Idaho’s ballot in 2008.
Idaho’s seat may be relatively easier for Republicans to keep because Craig plans to resign his seat by the end of this month as a result of a guilty plea in a sex sting this summer. A Republican governor will appoint a GOP replacement, thus giving Craig’s successor the advantage of incumbency.
But Nebraska and Virginia offer strong potential pickup opportunities for Democrats, meaning that Republicans might have to win more than just two Democratic seats to recapture the Senate.

Sen. Larry Craig, an Idaho Republican who is a member of the National Rifle Association delivered a video message to attendees at the “Friends of the NRA” dinner. He called attention to a recent court decision against the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns and legislation in Congress aimed at gun rights, among other things.
“[T]he Second Amendment is very clear, and it’s all about the right of the free citizen to defend oneself, one’s property and one’s loved ones,” Craig said. “It is an issue of self-defense. And in this country, we have believed that to be a supreme law of the land. … It really is all about our Constitution.”
