For some bizarre reason, journalists at The New York Times and elsewhere are starting to pay attention to the way Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton laughs. Patrick Healy dubbed it “the Clinton cackle,” and both Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich also mentioned Clinton’s laugh in recent columns.
Comedian Jon Stewart may be the brains behind the current obsession with Clinton’s laugh. He did an entire skit on the subject. Numerous other video clips of the laugh, some of them mean-spirited, are surfacing online, too. Here’s one:

Early in the presidential campaign, multiple Democrats jumped into the race with online videos that sounded a lot alike. They echoed a similar theme about listening to voters.
Now several months into the contest, the two leading Democrats in the field and one of the top Republicans are preaching another message. It’s a message that is as trite and true in presidential elections as red, white and blue campaign signs: change.
The “Ready For Change” ad of Democrat Hillary Clinton focuses on her work on behalf of families, children and veterans, as well as her vows to end the war in Iraq, provide health insurance for all Americans and achieve energy independence: “If we have the will, she has the strength. If we have the conviction, she has the experience. If we’re ready to change, she’s ready to lead.”
The “Change” ad of Democrat Barack Obama emphasizes his efforts to implement ethics reform, post federal spending details online and force lobbyists to disclose campaign contributions: “Barack Obama believes government should work for people, and together we can make that happen.”
And the “Change Begins With Us” ad from Republican Mitt Romney looks inward to the GOP’s reputation with voters: “If we’re going to change Washington, Republicans have to put our own house in order” by halting big spending, preventing illegal immigration and adhering to strict ethical standards. “When Republicans act like Democrats, America loses.”

Democratic Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York today unveiled the healthcare plan that she promises to pursue if elected president, and her campaign unveiled a new advertisement to make the case for the plan.
The ad touts Clinton’s past efforts on the healthcare front and promotes her as an agent of change in the field: “Now she has a healthcare plan that lets you keep your coverage if you like it, provides affordable choices if you don’t, and covers every American. So if you’re ready for change, she’s ready to lead.”
Here are the highlights of the “American Health Choices Plan“:
- Insurers would have to offer coverage to all who apply and pay their premiums, and they would have to automatically renew policies.
- Preventive care would be covered.
- Employees would receive refundable tax credits based on income, and insurance premiums could never rise above a certain percentage of income.
- Large employers would be required to provide health insurance or contribute to the cost of coverage, and small businesses would receive tax credits for doing so.
- Medicare overpayments to managed care plans would be reduced, and Medicare could negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs.
Clinton will discuss the plan, which would cost an estimated $110 billion a year and be funded by modernizing the healthcare system and eliminating tax cuts for wealthier people, in a live webcast at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Family members of wounded veterans would be eligible for benefits under the Family and Medical Leave Act for six months under language co-authored by Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Christopher Dodd, D-Conn. The proposal has the support of both Democratic and Republican senators.
“Imagine if your husband or wife, or your son or your daughter, had been injured,” Clinton said on the Senate floor. “You’d want to be with them and want to take care of them. But you wouldn’t want to lose your job in the process. It’s not a choice that military families should take.”

Democrat Hillary Clinton gets more attention as a presidential candidate these days, but shortly after 4 a.m. today, she was the focal point in the Senate chamber, where New York voters last fall sent her to serve a second six-year term.
“The right strategy before the surge and the right strategy now, post-escalation, is the same,” Clinton said in the Senate’s all-night debate about the Iraq war. “Start bringing our troops out of this multi-sided, sectarian civil war.”
Later in the day, after a change of clothes, Clinton took to the floor again to talk about higher education. She touted a bill that, among other things, would authorize the largest increase in Pell grants in more than a decade and implement a “student borrower bill of rights” designed to protect them while they repay their loans.
