The ‘Bitter’ Politics Test

April 15, 2008, 9:29pm

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been under fire for days because of his statement that small-town Americans “cling” to guns, religion and bigotry because they are “bitter” about their economic circumstances. But other candidates may be tested by Obama’s “bitter” comments, too.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is trying to attach Obama’s words to Democratic Senate candidates Al Franken of Minnesota and Mark Warner of Virginia. The NRSC issued a video press release that all but dares them to endorse Obama.

The video releases also target Democratic convention “superdelegates” John Kerry of Massachusetts, Mary Landreiu of Louisiana, Mark Udall of Colorado and Tom Udall of New Mexico.

Sen. Casey Endorses Barack Obama

March 28, 2008, 9:43pm

Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., today endorsed fellow Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois for the Democratic presidential nomination. Casey made the announcment in a speech in Pittsburgh. The state’s primary is weeks away.

“This campaign is a chance for America to chart a new course, to go down a different path” that is about “healing” and “a new kind of politics,” Casey said, adding that Obama is the only candidate who can lead the nation down that path.

Yes, We Can — Without The Government

February 16, 2008, 9:36pm

The “Yes, we can” motto of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been immortalized and satirized in online music videos over the past week.

This video instead salutes Ronald Reagan for his can-do faith in Americans to succeed without their government. I found the video on YouTube and convinced it’s creator to also upload a similar version to Eyeblast.tv, a video-sharing site for young conservatives where I now serve as the executive producer.

With hundreds of delegates at stake in Super Tuesday voting tomorrow, John McCain and Mitt Romney are continuing their battle for the hearts of conservative voters over the airwaves.

McCain has been the one taking the most heat from establishment conservative commentators, but he is trying to score points by using Romney’s own words against him. In an ad titled “Trust,” McCain’s team highlights Romney emphasizing his independence, noting his vote in a Democratic primary and distancing himself from the time of Republican presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Romney’s campaign, meanwhile, has an ad dubbed “Very Close” that compares McCain’s views on hot-button issues like immigration with those of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Another Romney ad says McCain “Falls Short” in key policy areas.

AdWatch: Movin’ On To Donna Edwards

February 4, 2008, 8:45pm

The online activist group MoveOn.org has had enough of Rep. Albert Wynn. The group is backing his rival, Donna Edwards, in the Feb. 12 Democratic primary in Maryland and putting its ad money where it’s mouth is.

MoveOn the second independent group to advertise against Wynn. The Service Employees International Union also is not a fan of his.

House races in Maryland are drawing quite a bit of independent ads. As noted last week, The Club For Growth also is making the case against Rep. Wayne Gilchrest in the Republican primary race for his seat.
