The ‘Bitter’ Politics Test

April 15, 2008, 9:29pm

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been under fire for days because of his statement that small-town Americans “cling” to guns, religion and bigotry because they are “bitter” about their economic circumstances. But other candidates may be tested by Obama’s “bitter” comments, too.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee is trying to attach Obama’s words to Democratic Senate candidates Al Franken of Minnesota and Mark Warner of Virginia. The NRSC issued a video press release that all but dares them to endorse Obama.

The video releases also target Democratic convention “superdelegates” John Kerry of Massachusetts, Mary Landreiu of Louisiana, Mark Udall of Colorado and Tom Udall of New Mexico.

The Republican presidential candidate also discussed health care, energy policy and more in an interview with “The Glenn And Helen Show.”

Giuliani has caught heat throughout the campaign for his past views about gun rights. He told Glenn Reynolds that he believes the Second Amendment protects “an individual, personal right to bear and carry arms, not just one that’s related to the militia.”

Rep. Eric Cantor is using the First Amendments, which guarantees the right to petition the government, in an attempt to “Save The Second.”

The Virginia Republican just launched a petition drive aimed at upholding a U.S. court decision that said the District of Columbia’s ban on handguns is unconstitutional. The U.S. solicitor general on Friday submitted a brief that said while the D.C. law may be unconstitutional, the case should be returned to a lower court and re-examined.

Cantor was irritated enough by the brief to use some of his own campaign funds to lash out at the Justice Department. “Unelected bureaucrats are trying to write away our Second Amendment rights; we must not allow this to happen,” he wrote on the Web site to promote the petition. “This is bigger than politics — this is about our fundamental rights as citizens of the United States.”

Just Say No To The Federal Government

October 16, 2007, 6:42pm

Do you wish the federal government would just leave you alone? So do Grover Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform, and a bunch of other folks — gun owners, home-schoolers, “communities of faith” and small businessmen — who are pushing the idea of a Leave Us Alone Coalition.

“Around the table sit everybody with sort of their hand in,” Norquist said in an interview at Heading Right Radio. “Leave my guns alone, my kids alone, my faith alone, my property alone, my kids alone.” He said none of those people agree on all issues, but all agree that they want minimal government involvement in their lives.

The people in the coalition “simply want to be free,” Norquist said.

How did McCain & Giuliani do at the National Rifle Association’s political shooting range? Let’s just say Smith & Wesson have nothing to fear from the firepower of that Republican presidential duo.
