Sen. James Inhofe joined five of his Republican colleagues this week in introducing a bill aimed at reviving plans for a nuclear-waste repository at Yucca Mountain in the Nevada desert to handle the spent nuclear fuel currently spread among dozens of states.
Inhofe, R-Okla., explained the proposal in a speech on the Senate floor. “The debate is no longer in existence, whether a repository should be built at Yucca Mountain. That decision was made in 2002. The task that remains is to develop a respository that protects public health and safety and the environment.”

Today’s high prices of energy would be much worse if there were an energy “crisis,” Rep. John Peterson told the National Association of Manufacturers, and knowing that is a good reason for policymakers to take action now to achieve U.S. energy security.
“We need to open up the outer continental shelf [to oil and gas exploration]; we need to do coal to liquids, coal to gas; we need to open up more of Alaska,” the Pennsylvania Republican, who will not seek re-election this year, said in the latest episode of NAM’s “American Business” vodcast. “You know, we need to do a lot of things because the energy crunch — we have these high numbers without a real crisis in the world.”

In an interview with the National Association of Manufacturers, U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab recapped trade news in 2007 and previewed what is on the agenda for 2008. The topics include enactment of the U.S.-Peru trade agreement.
A previous episode of NAM’s “America’s Business” vodcast included other excerpts from the groups interview with Schwab, as well as an interview with House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell, D-Mich.
Here’s an excerpt from Dingell in reaction to Congress’ decision to include in a new energy law language to increase fuel-efficiency standards for vehicles: “It will be hard for industry to meet, but industry has supported that and has indicated it is something that they can do and will do. And so it is a meaningful stride forward.”
