President Bush today tackled an array of subjects in a press conference with reporters.
The topics included: the state of the U.S. economy, including high energy and food prices; the progress of military operations in Afghanistan; the plans for extra spending on the war in Iraq; presidential relations with Congress; the decision by former President Jimmy Carter to meet with leaders of the terrorist group Hamas; and Bush’s expectations of how the next president will approach the war on terror.
President Bush spoke at the “America’s Small Business Summit” hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on April 18, and the chamber today posted a series of videos of the event to YouTube. Here are Bush’s thoughts about the U.S. economy and the economic stimulus package enacted earlier this year:
House Republicans today interrupted the Democrats’ debate on a bill to protect beaches in order to badger the Democrats about their failure to pass a promised “commonsense plan” to lower oil prices. The office of House Minority Leader Roy Blunt, R-Mo., compiled a video that recapped the floor confrontation.
A group of conservative senators is about to embark on a rhetorical crusade in defense of the free market as the best solution for America’s healthcare system. Some of the participating senators outlined the effort in a visit to the Heritage Foundation.

“The economy is in deep trouble” and President Bush bears the blame for having relied to much on the free market to mend itself without government action, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in an interview with PoliticsTV. Reid, D-Nev., also scolded Bush for taking action to help “Wall Street” but not Americans on “Main Street” hurt by the current economy.
