When Barack Obama is inaugurated in two days, Catholic voters who oppose abortion want him to know that his historic rise to power might not have happened if his mother could have predicted his troubled early years.
CatholicVote.com today released a video that reminds people of Obama’s circumstances as a child — the kind of circumstances that prompt some women to abort their babies. The ad, the first production of a campaign titled “Life: Imagine The Potential,” recounts Obama’s biography over the backdrop of an ultrasound showing a baby in the womb.
“This child’s future is a broken home,” the ad says. “He will be abandoned by his father. His single mother will struggle to raise him despite the hardships he will endure. This child will become the first African-American president.”
UPDATE, 1/29: NBC has rejected the ad as unfit for airing during the Super Bowl because of its “political” nature.

Thirty-five years ago today, the Supreme Court legalized abortion with its Roe. v. Wade decision. Both opponents of abortion and proponents of abortion rights for women commemorate the occasion every year, and this year, the American Civil Liberties Union released a short online video that makes the case for decision.
ADDED: Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee made the case against legalized abortion today in an event marking the Roe v. Wade decision.

Yesterday’s edition of HotlineTV called attention to the “pro-life, whole-life” catchphrase that Sen. Sam Brownback has been using in his presidential campaign. Now you can hear the Kansas Republican explain it himself.
Here’s an excerpt, followed by a 10-minute video from the campaign trail: “It’s about the life in the womb being sacred, unique, a child of the living God. But it’s about that applying to everybody at every stage in life. And it’s about that applying to Terri Schiavo. When she’s in that difficult situation, she nonetheless remains a sacred, living life, a child of a living God that should be protected and fought for. … We’re just asking people to recognize what life is. It’s an incredible gift.”
Schiavo’s brother endorsed Brownback as part of the pro-life, whole-life tour.

Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson to the National Right To Life Conference in a video shared with the world via YouTube: “In 1994, I made my first run for the U.S. Senate, and I was pride to receive the National Right to Life endorsement. I’ve been with you ever since — and you’ve been with me ever since. On abortion-related votes, I’ve been a hundred percent.”
Thompson reminded the anti-abortion crowd of his role in spearheading the first judicial confirmation of now-Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, a man that Thompson said he hopes will become “the best chief justice that this country has ever had.” Roberts recently played a role in upholding a law against “partial birth” abortion.
