Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo represents a part of Silicon Valley in California and has been a leader on technology issues like banning Internet-related taxes, network neutrality and patent reform. Eshoo’s work in the arena prompted Google to invite her to its headquarters for the Internet firm’s first policy discussion of 2008.
“[S]he is almost the perfect example of a congressperson,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt said at the one-hour Friday session, which Google has posted on its YouTube service. “She understands technology. She understands what we need. She understands politics. She’s long-term committed to the success of the country.”

Rep. Anna Eshoo is becoming a regular at “America’s Business,” the weekly video podcast produced by the National Association of Manufacturers. Last week, NAM aired a segment from the California Democrat about banning taxes on Internet access; this week, Eshoo talked about her bill to foster health information technology in America.
“I don’t think I have to remind the listeners that we live in an information age but that our healthcare system really remains mired in a pen-and-paper past,” Eshoo said. She added, “This is really the last large sector in our nation that for all intents and purposes remains untouched by information technology, so I think it’s about time.”

Last week’s online video that portrayed Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., as an Internet tax collector was just the first political shot on the issue by the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Today, the campaign arm of the Senate GOP dedicated its home page to the issue and produced a new video to promote its quest to “stop the Democrats from taxing the Internet.” The NRSC site features a timeclock counting down to the Nov. 1 expiration of a moratorium on Internet taxes.
The National Association of Manufacturers, which supports a permanent ban on Internet taxes, took a less political approach to the issue in a video interview with Rep. Anna Eshoo. The California Democrat fought unsuccessfully for a permanent ban last week, when the House opted instead for a bill that would renew the moratorium for four years.

In an interview with PoliticsTV, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., discusses the votes in his chamber for efforts to expand children’s health coverage and punish “hate crimes.”
President Bush has threatened to veto the children’s health bill. Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., is among the House lawmakers this week who urged Bush not to follow through on his threat. “[I]magine the person that stands at the doctor’s door and not allow children to go through — the president of the United States,” Eshoo said. “… We should pass this and say a prayer that the president will come out of his cloud and sign the bill.”
