As the “self-appointed authority” on all things political, HotlineTV has compiled a list of signature lines and catchphrases being embraced by candidates this year. Here’s a sampling:
1) Rudy Giuliani: America is safer with a Republican president. “Thanks for making it partisan, Rudy,” Hotline editor John Mercurio said.
2) Sam Brownback/Mike Huckabee: Whole life, pro-life. “Whether it’s prison reform or Darfur or other human rights issues, he takes a very consistent stand,” Hotline’s Amy Walter said of Brownback.
3) Newt Gingrich: It’s just plain stupid to start running this early. “He’s the arbiter of stupid this year,” Mercurio said.

Is the end in sight near for the presidential campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Hotline editor John Mercurio thinks it might be. He said McCain “may or may not make it to the Iowa caucuses,” particularly because of his role in pushing the Senate’s pending immigration bill.
“I don’t see any sort of alternative strategy for him that makes this a winnable campaign,” Mercurio said. Hotline editor-in-chief added that McCain “is not going to get a break from conservatives” and said his unexpected ties to President Bush and his policies “makes [McCain] the weakest candidate.”
