President Bush today tackled an array of subjects in a press conference with reporters.
The topics included: the state of the U.S. economy, including high energy and food prices; the progress of military operations in Afghanistan; the plans for extra spending on the war in Iraq; presidential relations with Congress; the decision by former President Jimmy Carter to meet with leaders of the terrorist group Hamas; and Bush’s expectations of how the next president will approach the war on terror.
Bloggers in the Washington, D.C., area were invited to the Newseum on Monday for a sneak peek at the facility, which opens April 11. And no wonder — bloggers already are a part of the history in the Newseum. Their impact has been felt from within the ivory tower of mainstream media to the White House, the courts and Congress.
As a member of the Media Bloggers Association, I was one of the members invited to the event. I interviewed Newseum officials, journalists and bloggers, and shot footage of Newseum displays and more for use on Eyeblast.tv, a video-sharing site and online social network for conservatives where I now serve as the executive producer.
The House Republican Conference has released a short video that touts the party’s success at fighting Democrats in 2007. The conference boasts that the video outlines how “House Republicans drove the agenda like no minority in history.”
Congress should stop tax deductions to private equity firms that buy companies in order to quickly resell them at a profit, according to a former government economist who founded the Economic Policy Institute.
We should not allow companies who are buying these firms and flipping them to take tax deductions on borrowed money,” Jeff Faux, the author of “The Global Class War,” said in a video interview with Brave New Films. Deductions for those kinds of investments should only be allowed if the goal is “creating jobs and making America more competitive,” he added, arguing that the income should be taxed just like wages.
“Congress is elected by voters; voters need to tell members of Congress that this has to be changed,” Faux said. “Otherwise, America’s economic problems will just get worse.”
The interview is part of Brave New Films’ “War On Greed” campaign, which also asks presidential candidates to “make a pledge, if elected, that you will work to close the buyout industry’s tax loopholes.” The primary target is buyout specialist Henry Kravis.
