The Politics Of Iraq, In Video

May 4, 2007, 7:07am

First came the veto, now come the political ads.

Earlier this week, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released an advertisement critical of President Bush for “vetoing a new direction in Iraq.”

Now the Republican National Committee has released a video that accuses Democrats of playing politics with emergency military spending.

“Stop the politics. Fund the troops,” says the ad, which was released after the House on Wednesday upheld the veto of a bill that would have conditioned more funding to troops in Iraq on a timetable for bringing those troops home.

The presidential campaign of Democrat John Edwards also is delivering its anti-war, anti-veto message through video — and in a unique way. The campaign invited its supporters to share their thoughts on film, and the campaign then spliced them into a “We, The People” ad that encouraged Congress to stand firm against Bush.

Earlier this year, meanwhile, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee aired an ad that criticized Republican senators for stalling debate on the future of the Iraq war.

    As an ordinary voting an American I am sick and tired of hearing politicians telling me what I want. I think I know what is the right thing to vote for and the people in congress don’t get it.
    The lives of those in the military are on the line and they are fighting the good fight. These power hungry people in Washington don’t really care about Iraq, America, or the men,women, and children being killed and injured in these regions. They are out of touch with reality. They don’t see it as touching them personally so long as they can maintain power is all that matters. We little people are nothing. They don’t care!
    There is no use trying to argue or make concessions to greedy power hungry politicians, they will do what suits them. Like the wonderful speaker of the house going to Syria. Or Mr. Reid saying for all the world to see that the war is lost, what are we, the common people to do? Vote! But it seems that that is being fixed. I sure hope that we can raise some voices and scream WE ARE AMERICA and we should be a proud nation, not ashamed of anything. This is where I was born, and I am proud of this country, I will not apologize for it.
    Well I just needed to add my voice since I have nothing else.
    Thanks,
    Steffi

    When Pilate asked the crowd whether to set Barabbas or Jesus free, they asked for Barabbas who was a convicted murderer to be let go and Jesus was crucified. This was said to be the “voice of the people”, and when compared to what is happening in America today, it becomes very simple to me, at least. The wrong voices are yelling the loudest, and do not represent the majority of America’s opinions. They represent the narrow minded who only listen to what is fed them on television, which is completely left wing biased, and does not represent true journalism.

    AWFULLY funny this is happening right now, while milblogs are being cracked down.

    I’d very much like to know WHO and WHAT pressured the Services into taking this milblog crackdown action. The general news I get from Milblogs is that though the situation’s rough sledding in Iraq and Afghanistan it’s not Chicken Little time over there, like some parties would very very much want us to believe.

    Why is John Edwards mentioned on an AirCongerss site, he’s not in Congress, and spent a term there - during which he barely attended Senate Intelligence Committee hearings like his running mate (who now does in response to the criticism during 2004).

    As to the rest of this, anti war bush bashers are the least informed people I know. I’ve never learned anything from any one of them I didn’t hear in F911 or see on the evening news; however, each time I speak with them I enlighten them as to facts they didn’t know and the hypocrisy of their positions and opinions as compared to the democrats and clinton years.

    I hope there truly is silent majority, because if this is the future of America, I’m at a loss as to where to go.

    We have a rendez-vous with destiny, again, and I hope it turns out well - the stakes are even higher this time.

    I am really sick and tired to hear about the “silent majority”. Why are we silent? It is about time that the liberal, left wing, immoral loud mouths are responded to. Their hypocrisy must continue to be exposed by those bloggers and radio talk show hosts, but it is time for the American citizen, the one that cringes everytime Read or Pelosi try to drive another death nail into the country, to make his or her voice heard.
    Wake up America, before the left wing loonies and their political correctness destroy this great country of ours!

    Dear Congress,

    You have a job description! No, really, you do! And it has express things you need to do with warpowers. Amazing, isn’t that? Let us take a peek at them:

    Section I, Article 8 - in part

    “To define and punish Piracies and Felonies committed on the high Seas, and Offences against the Law of Nations;

    To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;

    To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years;

    To provide and maintain a Navy;

    To make Rules for the Government and Regulation of the land and naval Forces;

    To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

    To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

    To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same shall be, for the Erection of Forts, Magazines, Arsenals, dock-Yards, and other needful Buildings;–And

    To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.”

    One more word about insufficient supplies and I shall duly point out that it is Congress, not the Executive that lays out the entire scope of the Armed Forces.

    Congress gives direction on which Enemies need attacking and declare war, and Letters of Marque and Reprisal via Privateers to address same.

    Congress gets to decide on spending, but for all activities that are directed by Congress, you do, indeed, need to pay up or end those directions. I find it strange that Congress does not want to actually USE its powers to defend the Union nor to empower Citizens and their lawfully Warranted Companies, to go after the Enemies of the Union above and beyond the Armed Forces.

    The Commander in Chief is the sole organ of government for directing the deployment of the Armed Forces for the lawfully approved actions of the United States. As is the Head of State and all representation in international relations vested in the President as held by the Supreme Court in US v Curtiss Wright Export Corp. The Senate gets to approve treaties and Congress may regularize them, those are its international affairs duties outside the laws of the high seas.

    When Congress refuses to do what it is set out to do it is breaking with the Constitution. That is abdicating responsibility with the power granted to Congress by We the People. That is breaking your personal Oaths to uphold and defend the Constitution.

    Saving lives is not saving Liberty and neither are done when Congress does not do its job. That is no longer making ‘a more perfect Union’ nor does it ‘insure domestic Tranquility’ and it does not ‘provide for the common defence’ nor does it ‘establish Justice’. It does none of those things.

    Why does Congress want to break with the Constitution?

    The bottom line is do we want an Al Qaeda mini-state in Sunni Arab Iraq? That’s what withdrawal at this point means.

    The Anbari tribes have started to turn against AQ, but that’s recent and not irreversible. We need more time for the Iraqi government to get strong enough that they can deny AQ a safe haven. The ISF are making more progress every month; this is not open-ended.
