More than 30 people were killed today in a shooting at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va. The worst mass shooting in U.S. history is sure to be a hot topic for discussion in Congress in coming days, as policymakers ponder what, if anything, could be done to prevent or respond to future shootings.

President Bush lamented the shooting today, as did congressional leaders like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning,” Bush said. “When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community.”

Pelosi also asked for a moment of silence on the House floor to remember the victims of the shootings.

For details of the massacre, watch these video reports from AP, including footage from a camera on a cellular telephone that captured audio of the gunshots in one of the campus buildings.
