Mitt Romney: Mr. Veto

April 7, 2007, 11:42am

Presidential vetoes went out of style in the six years when Republicans controlled both the White House and Congress, and federal spending came into style as the GOP tried to maintain its lock on power. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is vowing to reverse course on both fronts if he is elected president.

“I know how to veto. I like vetoes,” the former governor of Massachusetts boasts in a new advertisement where he pledges to cap non-defense discretionary spending at inflation minus 1 percent and veto any bill that does not meet that standard. “I vetoed hundreds of spending appropriations as governor, and frankly, I can’t wait to get my hands on Washington.”

HotlineTV discussed the ad in its latest episode. Shira Toeplitz, who is covering the Romney campaign for The Hotline, said Romney “sounds better” in the new ad than he does when talking about other issues important to conservatives.
