What should you do if you’re a potential presidential candidate and offend an ever-increasing segment of the American electorate? How about clarifying your views in an online video — and in two languages?

That’s what former House Speaker Newt Gingrich did this week after seemingly characterizing Spanish as “the language of living in the ghetto.”

“In the United States, it is important to speak the English language well in order to advance and have success,” Gingrich said. “And to further this goal, we should replace bilingual eduation programs with intensive English instruction so we can all know the common language of our country. This is an expression of support for Latinos, not an attack on their language.”
