Newt Gingrich’s Gas-For-Hostages Plan

March 31, 2007, 11:41pm

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a potential Republican presidential candidate, has a message for Iranian leaders in response to their decision to take some British sailors hostage for allegedly infiltrating Iranian waters: Release them, or we’ll take out your gas supply.

Gingrich noted that while Iran produces plenty of oil for the world market, it doesn’t have much capacity to turn all of that oil into gasoline. He said the nation has only one refinery, making it vulnerable to economic pressure to release the hostages.

“There should be a covert operation to sabotage the one refinery,” Gingrich said. “And the United States Navy … should simply stop any tanker that has gasoline, and we should say to the Iranian dictatorship, ‘Within 30 to 45 days, you will be walking.’ … We have to calmly and pleasantly eliminate their capacity to get gasoline, do it in a nonviolent manner, and tell them that the morning they want to be reasonable, they get to drive a car again.”
