Mud-Wrestling Mania: Hillary Vs. Obama

February 22, 2007, 9:23pm

CBS News anchor Katie Couric lectured the presidential campaigns of Democratic Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York and Barack Obama of Illinois for their open spat this week, which was triggered by comments from a former Clinton supporter who now favors Obama.

“It’s 21 months until Election Day,” Couric said. “Can’t we elevate the discussion and make it about issues and not insults? Every election cycle begins with this fervent dream. Will candidates ever realize that mud-slinging just gets everyone dirty.”

A third candidate in the race, Bill Richardson of New Mexico, chastised David Geffen, the former Clinton supporter, and said Obama should condemn Geffen’s comments. “If we’re going to win,” Richardson said of Democrats as they seek to recapture the White House in 2008, “we’re going to have to be positive.” Richardson served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under former President Bill Clinton, the senator’s husband.

Mud slinging does get people dirty. I wonder how much money goes into putting the each other down compared to being more specific in what they plan on doing for our country.
