White House Press Briefing
February 16, 2007, 10:14pm
Here are some excerpts from White House Press Secretary Tony Snow at today’s briefing:
- “[A]nything that is going to tie the hands of military commanders and deny both the funds and flexibility they’re going to need, he will take a dim view of.”
- “[M]embers of Congress have taken their own gamble here. They’re gambling on failure — some members, at least. The president has a plan for success. It’s all aimed at success. And there’s going to be a vote before long where they’re going to have to vote about whether they are going to supply the funds and the flexibility necessary for success.”
- The president’s call for an immigration plan with a mix of border security, employer verification of legal immigrants and tamper-proof identification cards for laborers “is credible and, at the same time, is humane in bringing in people who want to work in America and, over time, also those who want to join the line to become American citizens.”
- “[T]he alternative minimum tax is — it’s a cruel tax and it’s an unacceptable tax. It needs to be fixed. We have 20 months to do it.”
