Bush On The Air: Tax Cuts For Growth

February 3, 2007, 7:22pm

When the economy is going strong, what’s the best thing to do to keep it that way? Cut taxes — or so said President Bush in his weekly radio address:

“By cutting taxes, we put more money into the hands of American families and small businesses,” he said. “You have used this money to produce strong and lasting economic growth. And now Congress needs to make this tax relief permanent, so we can keep America’s economy growing.”

Bush also made another pitch for eliminating earmarks for specific projects in federal spending, and he resurrected the call for a line-item veto to help him keep earmarks in check when Congress won’t. Plus he urged action to curtail spending on entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina touted the diversity of his party in this week’s Democratic address, which occurred during Black History Month. Clyburn, who is black, said House Democrats came together during the first 100 legislative hours of the 110th Congress despite the different cultures represented within the party — and he promised more of the same as lawmakers continue their work this year.

“The challenges and promise of America’s future are great,” he said. “To be successful in our efforts to move this nation in a New Direction this Congress must rely on the diverse views and experiences of its membership to help us craft an agenda over the next 100 days and weeks that will address the needs of the American people. The rich tapestry of this nation, and its reflection in the current Congress, is our greatest asset.”
