The Swift-Boating Of Hillary Clinton

January 28, 2007, 10:38pm

In the 2004 presidential election, a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ran advertisements questioning the military service claims of Democratic nominee John Kerry. The term “swift-boating” has been part of the political lexicon ever since.

Critics of the way Kerry was treated in the spots point to them as the epitome of negative advertising in the 21st century, but Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has its fans, too. One of them, the Stop Hillary Political Action Committee, is openly soliciting funds for a swift-boating campaign against likely 2008 presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The group already has an anti-Clinton ad circulating on the Internet. It features Iowa Democrats who just can’t stomach the idea of Clinton, a New York Democrat, in charge of the country.

As a pejorative, YOUR political lexicon and those who are like-minded. However, do not delude yourself (or your readers) that it’s universally defined. History may well provide you with an alternate descriptive. Ask John Kerry.

Personal Democracy Forum, for instance, has two skeptical articles, Controlled by Control (no free-wheeling social media effort here) and Clinton Ahead of the Pack? (apparently, no). Beltway Blogroll jumps in as well, talking about her apparently carefully scripted online chats. Bloggers and online-politics smarty-pants aren’t all that Hillary has to worry about, though, with Air Congress reporting on a Swift-boating attempt using online video. […]
