Friday Fun: ‘Big Daddy’ Bobby Byrd
January 26, 2007, 9:03pm
Friday is a great time for video fun, so I’m going to institute a new feature here dedicated to the proposition that all men (and women) should start their weekends with laughter.
I’m thrilled to be able to introduce “Friday Fun” with a knee-slapping video of the senior senator from the great state of West Virginia, hereafter known as “Big Daddy” Bobby Byrd. Byrd recently gave a speech at Marshall University in his home state (and mine), and he had the audience in stitches as he joked about his age and bragged about his talents for funneling federal money to the Mountain State.
Here are some excerpts to get you started, but the video is worth a thousand words. Read and then watch:
- “Our efforts to construct this facility and create a stronger foundation for a biotech industry here in West Virginia began … where? With a visit to my office. Yeah, heh, heh. Yeah. Yeah, man. Yeah, man, a visit to my office. Yeah. In 1999, by former Marshall University President Wade Gilley.
- “Yeah, man, you’re lookin’ at Bid Daddy. Big Daddy. Rolled up my sleeves, man. Yes I did, to do the work in Congress. Yeah, man. I’ve been there longer than anybody else. Ah, hah. Heh, heh. Yeah, man. Hallelujah.”
- “The tourists walk through the halls and I say — I don’t care where they’re from, I just say, ‘I’m Robert Byrd. I’m the oldest thing around here. Heh, heh. The oldest thing around here other than the building.’ Yeah, man. Yeah, man.”
- “So I added $35.6 million. That ain’t chicken feed. No man, that’s not little stuff. … $35.6 million, $35.6 million. Hey. $35.6 million. Ah, how ’bout that? How, ’bout that? Yeah, man. Get out your pocketbooks!”
I’ll doubt that I will be so lucky as to find humourous treasures like this every week, but I’ll do my best. If you stumble across good footage during your own surfing, please shoot me an e-mail via the contact form.
Here is another video — a remix of the presidential announcement by Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y. — to give you an idea of what to expect at “Friday Fun”:
That one obviously had a Republican slant, but all remixed attempts at political humor and satire (save those with vulgarity) are welcome at AirCongress, so let me know what you find — or create.

[…] It’s not the first time that a Clinton critic has remixed one of her online videos, and it won’t be the last. And odds are good that all of the other leading presidential candidates can expect the same kind of treatment. Welcome to presidential politics in the YouTube era — a trend that AirCongress is tracking, along with sites like PrezVid and techPresident. […]
