The announcement that political observers have been expecting for at least six years came today: Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton formed an exploratory committee to make her consideration of a run for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination official.

“I’m not just starting a campaign, though,” Clinton said in an online video. “I’m beginning a conversation — with you, with America.” She said she will hold live, online video chats with voters all next week, starting Monday.

“Let’s talk about how to bring the right end to the war in Iraq and to restore respect for America around the world,” Clinton said. “How to make us energy independent and free of foreign oil. How to end the deficits that threaten Social Security and Medicare. And let’s definitely talk about how every American can have quality, affordable health care.”

When candidates have larger events or make major policy speeches, the crowds are bigger, but there is often still an opportunity for questions. But under the pressures of major media coverage, with polls narrowing in Iowa, campaigns can potentially control questions and coverage by planning questions ahead of time. […]
