Drug Imports And Disaster Aid

January 11, 2007, 9:08pm

Sen. Byron Dorgan introduced bills on disaster aid and drug imports to begin the 110th Congress.

His bill on disaster aid, including droughts that sometimes affect the Democrat’s home state of North Dakota, would be addressed in the farm legislation planned for this year. “I want this farm bill to have a disaster title, as previous farm bills used to have. … We’re not able to get ad hoc disaster [aid] when we have disaster strike,” Dorgan said.

The bill on drug imports would let American consumers legally buy medicines from Canada and other select countries. “We are charged the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs, and it’s unfair,” Dorgan said. He added that the bill is expected to move this year even though past efforts have failed. “We will get a vote, and it will not be blocked.”

The last farm bill had $.5 bn for disasters an $13 bn spent on the usual waste fraud and abuse. In other words they spent more on creating disatsters than fixing them.

The best Congress money can buy.
