The Manufacturing Senator
November 17, 2006, 8:45pm
Manufacturing matters in Michigan, so it matters to Democrat Debbie Stabenow, who was just re-elected to a second Senate term from the Wolverine State. She mentioned the issue repeatedly in her first podcast since the Nov. 7 election that shifted congressional power back to her party:
Stabenow sketched her plans for the 110th Congress, including the committees where she will work: Agriculture, Budget and Finance. She counted Finance as the most important assignment because she will be “the only member from a Greak Lakes manufacturing state on the committee, and this is an important voice.”
She also mentioned that she will use her position as the new chairwoman of the Democratic Steering Outreach Committee to focus on manufacturing and invite people from that sector to Washington to connect with senators.
Stabenow covered two other topics in the podcast: 1) her plan to resurrect legislation that would create the position of “chief trade prosecutor” to enforce U.S. trade laws; and 2) her advocacy for alternative fuels, particularly to expand the incentives for ethanol and biodiesel plants in Michigan.
